This must have been a complex thing to build way back when Tom
Tom Wilson: Started, I think in something like 1132 and finished a couple of hundred years later.
It is very impressive even though I have no idea what it is
Tom Wilson: It's the babtistry. - "The Pisa Baptistery of St. John (Italian: Battistero di San Giovanni) is a Roman Catholic ecclesiastical building in Pisa, Italy. Construction started in 1152 to replace an older baptistery, and when it was completed in 1363, it became the second building, in chronological order, in the Piazza dei Miracoli, near the Duomo di Pisa and the cathedral's free-standing campanile, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The baptistery was designed by Diotisalvi, whose signature can be read on two pillars inside the building, with the date 1153." Wikipedia
Standing straight too.
Tom Wilson: The "leaning virus" didn't spread very far smile
It is a lovely shaped building.
Tom Wilson: It is indeed.
To know the date this was built is remarkable.
Tom Wilson: Yes, I was quite surprised by the start date - still, humans seem to have been building stuff for a very long time before this! "Dating back to around 3600 BCE, the Knap of Howar is the oldest building in the world and is most likely the oldest house still standing. The Knap of Howar consists of two stone-built houses that were discovered in the 1930s when erosion revealed parts of the stone walls. Soon after, the site was excavated and archaeologists discovered that the two structures were linked by a passage through the joint walls."
