photoblog image Venetian Gate

Venetian Gate

Zadar was the regional capital during the period of Venetian rule - this gate leads into the city. The lion is holding an open book which, apparently, signifies that the gate was constructed in a time of peace. Had they been at war, the book would have been closed.
